History

Constellation Brands’ story started in 1945 as an upstate wine producer in New York. Marvin Sands purchased Canandaigua Industries for wine production and selling in the East and made a gross sale of $150,000 in the next year. In 1954 with the introduction of the Wild Irish Rose Brand, paved the way for the growth of the company. This led to doubling the gross profit to $8 million by 1961. In 1974, the company acquired Bisceglia Brothers Winery in Madera, California, and gained access to a large wine market in the western parts of the U.S.A. In 1987, Widmer Wine Cellars and Manischewitz best-selling brands became part of the company. In 1993, the company acquires Barton Incorporated and started business in imported beer and distilled spirit categories. In 1994, they purchased Mission Bell Winery and operated four major wine brands in the U.S. In 1999, Canandaigua Brands purchased SIMI Winery and Franciscan Winery. In 2000, the company is renamed Constellation Brands representing the broad ranges across brands of wine, beer, and spirits. In 2006, Grupo Modelo and Constellation enters into a partnership for distributing the Corona and Modelo Especial premium spirits. The company also acquired Canadian wine company Vincor International and its core market included the U.S, U.K, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In 2013, Constellation acquired Grupo Modelo’s US beer business from Anheuser-Busch InBev. In December 2015, Constellation announced the $1 billion acquisition of Ballast Point Brewing of San Diego. In October 2016, Constellation announced the $160 million acquisition of High West Distillery of Park City, Utah. In August 2017, Constellation announced the acquisition of Funky Buddha Brewery of Oakland Park, Florida. In 2018, Texas Brewer Four Corners Brewing Co. joins Constellation Brands. In the same year, Constellation Brands increase its investment to 4 billion US dollars and increase its ownership corporation in the Canopy Growth Corporation, a leading diversified Cannabis Company. In July 2020, Constellation Brands acquired Empathy Wines, co-founded by entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk. On September 15, 2020, it was announced Constellation Brands acquires craft spirits producer Copper & Kings American Brandy.
