El Tesoro de Don Felipe Tequila and master distiller Carlos Camarena introduce the first release in The Mundial Collection. The first edition is smoky tequila called the Laphroaig Collection finished in Laphroaig casks. Mundial Collection from Altena Distillery in Jalisco, Mexico is a Limited Edition series of premium and experimental one-of-a-kind single barrel expressions finished in unique casks. These unique casks previously held premium spirits across the globe. The collections share a commitment to their craftsmanship of high-quality spirit making.
The art of making El Tesoro Mundial Collection: The Laphroaig Edition, master distiller Carlos Camarena and El Tereso team worked together throughout the process. Carlos took Anejo Tequila aged for nine months in ex-Bourbon barrels and finished it for four months in casks that formerly held the famously peat-forward Laphroaig 10-Year-Old. Thus, in the single barrel bottling, the deep, rich agave flavors of El Tesoro Anejo Tequila are married with the spicy, peaty profile of Scotch whisky.
“We are thrilled to introduce this beautiful, exciting new spirit in collaboration with our friends at Laphroaig. While we continue upholding the traditional processes that have made El Tesoro the treasure of Jalisco, we also like to experiment with ways to bring Tequila production to a different level. While we continue upholding the traditional processes that have made El Tesoro the treasure of Jalisco, we also like to experiment with ways to bring Tequila production to a different level. The Laphroaig finish imparts a slight whiff of smoke on the nose but not heavy peat as one might expect. It is just enough to create a specific spiciness that shows how well the peatiness of Laphroaig intertwines and complements the deep, rich agave flavors we are most proud of with our El Tesoro Añejo.”
Camarena commented.
“We have deep respect for the Tequila-making tradition in Mexico, and we recognize El Tesoro as a trailblazer in the quest to bring elevated sipping Tequilas to the market. We are honored to provide our 10-Year-Old Casks to bring a special new product to our shared fans and fine spirits connoisseurs around the world.”
adds Simon Brooking, Beam Suntory Brand Ambassador for Laphroaig.
The bottle design showcases the art of handcrafted tequila by La Altena, Mexico. The cap is designed in the shape of Tahona stone. The volcanic Tahona stone is used traditionally by the Islay distillery to crush the cooked agave. In the middle of the label, the El Tesoro brand is printed followed by the logo depicting jimadors moving the two-ton volcanic Tahona stone over the perfect agave fibers to unlock the flavors of agaves and produce the premium Anejo Tequilla. The single barrel of The Laphroaig Edition is engraved with specifications of the spirit.
The Laphroaig Collection Tequila is said to offer slight smoky aroma notes from Laphroaig casks. The limited-edition tequila also offers the tequila offers aromas of citrus, pineapple, berries, oak, cooked agave, leather, and peat. The palate offers roasted pepper, agave, maple, caramelized pineapple, barbecue, bacon, and sea salt.
The 40% ABV expression will become available in mid-November at select retailers and online for an RRP of US$125 per 750ml bottle.
